What are Moral Values?

According to us, any activity that involves judging right or wrong requires values. While “Morals” are the senses to make the right conclusion. In essence, moral values are personality traits. Following moral ideals help children develop a good personality that is likable. Moral values are the standards that help individuals choose for themselves. This is the reason for us to introduce a subject called moral science.

Students are now more into studies and games but somewhere lacking moral values. In our moral science subject, we inculcated the basic principles such as truthfulness, honesty, hospitality, tolerance, empathy, and more.

The Values To Incorporate –

1. Respect:

We tell the child to “Give respect so they will get loved back more.”  A child must be taught to respect people regardless of age, religion, nationality, or beliefs. We as parents and teachers are an example for the child when we speak respectfully. Another important thing to teach the child is to respect and accept the competition. We must inculcate in children, respect for their circumstances as they learn from their failures.

Healthy social and professional relations from their childhood are steps to make them social. Talking politely to their bus drivers, maidens or house help are the things we teach to build ideal behaviours.

2. Gratitude:

The expression of thanks and appreciation is the most incredible human nature. It begins with contentment. We at Walkertown, cultivate thankfulness in children. This event starts by thanking their maid who helped them complete their lunch box, their bus driver who got them in and out of the bus, and their teacher who guided them to learn and enjoy. We don’t teach these as a lesson but as regular exercise. We teach them this value as a part of their daily activities.

3. Honesty:

“Honesty is the best policy.” Children read this in their stories and books, but to understand it’s true meaning might be difficult for them .

A child can learn honesty by being truthful to the parents and teachers. Let your child speak to you fearlessly about their daily activities be it school or playground. Do not restrict them from expressing themselves.  Be it grabbing their friend’s pencil box or bringing a doll from their friends. Once they convey the situation to you, you can make them understand  if their actions were right or wrong and what’s the right approach . This way you can acquaint your child to understand the difference between a wrong and the right path. This will surely imbibe in them to not lie about anything.

In fact, our faculty encourages the children to tell what he/she did in the day. We take every word of the children and let them speak their heart out and to understand their perspectives which helps the faculty  to teach them things better.

4. Empathy:

Empathy means understanding the other person’s problems, issues, emotions, and concerns. This is important to make the child socialise with the surroundings and to offer help to people in need. To raise an empathetic child, we need to first  be empathetic toward them. Our teachers listen to the story of each of our students. We do not  judge or jump into conclusions before listening the whole story. Then we gently answer them, so that they feel comfortable sharing anything with us.

5. Compassion:

Feeling love and care for others is the best thing one can experience. It is our responsibility to instill such values in children. It is necessary that the children learns to feel the emotions. Compassion and kindness can boost academic performance as well as one’s health, happiness, and interpersonal relationships.

6. Equality:

Equality is an integral moral value to have. Treating everyone equally for their rights, and opportunities is necessary. This will help eradicate thoughts of supremacy. These feelings are learnt from the surroundings where they spend most of their time.

The way you treat your maids, watchman, or maintenance member matters a lot for the kid to learn equality. Equality need not be sitting parallel and doing the work always. It is treating people as a human than as your support at work.

7. Courage:

Courage is a willingness to do things in any unforeseen instance or difficult situation. This ethical practice prepares individuals to do what is right. If the child is telling about his classmate who is bullying him, take it seriously. Speak to him in detail. This makes the  child  understand that he needs to raise his voice against unfair things around them.

8. Generosity:

It is essential for fostering kindness and social responsibility in your child. A kind child will be willing to provide a helping hand. Allow your child to offer help to others in need. Let them do what little they can.

9. Perseverance:

Making consistent efforts to accomplish a goal or feat is the act of perseverance. It’s important to introduce youngsters to a never-give-up mentality when teaching tenacity. Introduce it in their  everyday life. If a child has low grades, encourage him/her to keep working hard until they receive the best grades. But do not reprimand and compare them with others. When you can, use encouraging words to help the child learn how to persevere.

10. Self-Control:

With self-control, Children can better manage their ideas, words, behaviour, and emotions. Such kids refrain from impulsive behaviour and temper tantrums. Promote the value of self-regulation and patience to develop self-control. For instance, the next time a situation makes you furious or frustrated, try to restrain your feelings and respond rationally. It will give your youngster the best role model for self-control.

Zero. It is the first whole number in the infinite-length number system. This single number changed the way mathematics takes its form. In the History of Math and Zero in India, we would read that without zero, there is no accounting and Calculus.

We might sometimes wonder why would this zero even exists. Just imagine, what could be the case if we remove zero from the number system. For most of the calculations, we think almost all would have gotten their end.

Well, you may feel why this math even existed. But, we cannot escape from the fact that maths is an important subject. Everything starts from Zero. So, we must accept Zero and Math as resources than calculations.

This is clear evidence that Zero was first developed in India around the fifth century. Soon then zero has become an important part of the number system across the world. The Indian scholar Pingala was the first to use ‘Shunya’, a Sanskrit word for zero. In 628 AD, Brahmagupta first defined zero and its operation. He developed a symbol which is a dot under the numbers. He also defined clear rules for addition and subtraction formulas. These are the basis of any mathematical function. Later these, Aryabatta used zero in the decimal system. Besides these, mathematics was also found to be used  in religious texts in ancient India.

The scholars preserved Mathematics in the city of Mohenjo Daro. This is far from the past during the Indus Valley Civilization. We use Math everywhere. Right from advanced architecture to its methods of measurement, counting, weighing, and more. The Roman number system does not go further than ten to the exponent of four. In contrast to it, the Indus Valley Civilization knew denominations as large as ten to the exponent of twelve.

A Brief about Zero in Maths!

Sometimes, nothing makes better sense if placed beside the valued one. The same is the case with Zero. Despite the negative view, the invention of zero simplified many calculations. European civilizations were late to incorporate zero until the Fibonacci concept came out. Later in the Middle East and Africa, zero has become a revolutionary concept. This inspired the middle age thinkers to fundamental mathematics in the world.

The count of Nothing started here

The discovery of zero did not come all at once. It followed a series of stages in its fullest evolution. The count of this Nothing started first by Babylonians some 4000 years ago.  They adopted the positional notation to count the number and read it(The one we follow now). They divided the number into columns and defined the positional value of each column. (Ex: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, etc from right to left).

In this process, when they find nothing between the columns, they filled it up with ‘-’(A Dash/Hyphen). This has nothing in the true sense.  Later on, they came out with placing wedges in place of dash/hyphen. When the context of writing the sum of 2 & -2, the result is not very precise to show.

From here, zero slowly began to spread all around. But the true appreciation of representing zero in number line ventured in India. The researchers saw the first evidence of zero as ‘Shunya’.  And then Brahmagupta on his rules for calculations wrote that

“When zero is added to a number or subtracted from a number, the number remains unchanged; and a number multiplied by zero becomes zero.”

Here are the few important roles of Zero in math –

1. Necessary for fractions:

We wouldn’t know the concept of fractions without zero in math. Zero created a more accurate way to describe fractions.

2. Set the Boundary:

In basic subtraction, you find negative numbers. How could these come without zero? Confused?

Zero is neither positive nor negative. But, It sets the boundary between them both.

3. Foundation of Digital world:

There are two kinds of people. They are those who understand math(1) and those who don’t(0).

You may not understand this, but the computer you are operating understands this well. Because all your computer functions are built in Binary language which has only two alphabet (0 and 1).

I recently asked my friends “What do they mean by kindness to children?”.

Before we start teaching them what kindness is, I urge every parent to figure out what it is actually. You wonder with the responses I got. Many and many responses include Compassion, Generosity, Empathy, Justice, Alleviating, and Suffering. Every answer from them has an underlying consideration for others.

Kindness may sometimes vary with the age and maturity of the children. For the littlest kids, it may be sharing their favourite crayons or breaking a cookie into two pieces and sharing with their friends. If we look into some older kids, this varies from patting the back of worried friends or waving at the neighbours or might be inviting their lonely classmates to join them for lunch.

Whatever your child’s perception of certain etiquette, encouraging them in the right way and nurturing them with correct values of kindness makes the difference in the long run.

Help them Understand What Kindness is?

Do you ever hear your child’s classroom stories after he is back from school?

You might have. Even if not, let’s start making it a routine for a few minutes before you ask them to write their homework. Because this helps them build strong communication and bond with you. Moreover, it gives you a picture of how and what is your child gesture toward his classmates.

Most of the time, you might have heard from kids saying, “Mamma, today my friend shared his lunch box with all of us as he bought some crunchy snacks.” Or sometimes you also hear them saying, “He has shared his favourite crayon with one of his friends who missed it.” Both scenarios may not be the highest levels of kindness but they mark the beginning of some positive vibes in your child towards others.

It is our duty as parents and teachers to teach them some basic things on how they can be more friendly with other people. Even before your kid is old enough to understand, start talking about it then and now. And here, no need to be complicated!

While you are feeding them, ask them to give you a scoop of what you are feeding them. Show your love for feeding yourself. This makes them understand sharing is love! While your kids are playing together in the park, if any friend of theirs falls and cries, your child may go help them or start crying. This is the right scenario to articulate empathy to your child. Ask them why they felt sad or why they helped their friend. You will be amazed by their answers.

Empathy – Compassion:

While discussing or teaching about kindness, Empathy and Compassion are the two words that make it all.

Empathy is when we think about what someone is feeling or thinking and then respond in a caring manner. And compassion is empathy in action – Caring for them, treating them with love and kindness, and helping them when they need it.

Every kid is having a skill unique to him and can be recognized only when they feel about doing or saying it or being empathetic.

Fortunately, kindness is something that can be taught by anyone, parents, family, or teachers. The most dominant way a child learns to be kind is by being observant of their surroundings. It means as adults we have a greater share in making them learn and understand kindness and its beauty. So, if you want to make your child learn kindness and, in the world, here are a few ways too!!

1.    Inspire their Imagination

No one can be a compassionate person unless he has a dream that awakens him from day sleep. Every one of us imagines our life to be so in the future and so our kids do the same. Yes, your kids imagine things in their little brains.

You might have heard kids narrating some stories instantly that came out right from their imagination. They narrate it so well that we might somewhere feel like it happened in real-time. So, you can model kindness from the time they start talking and understanding their surroundings.

It is said that 80% of parenting is Modelling. Children learn more from their parents. Right from greeting each other in the morning to sharing the chores equally to talking to the neighbors. It is equally important the way you treat your child or spend time with them listening to their school stories or sometimes imaginary stories. Respond to them with love, command less and only when required.

Modelling kindness constitutes many rights from you putting down the phone or speaking to your elders or neighbours to addressing other people.

3.    Practice Perspective Taking

Before your kid considers others, it is required to make them understand what the actual thing is. Consider a scenario where one of their play partners is shifting to another place by stating the correct reason. Ask them how they are feeling about it. This makes you understand what’s your child’s perspective on certain things or how he takes things that are usual and sudden. Ask them what he says if the same happens to them.

4.    Pay attention to the effects of kindness

Your kid may not always notice or feel the vibe of kindness they shared with others. Help them know and make them feel it. Tell them how the other people felt about their act of kind behaviour. Consider, that you heard from one of your kid’s teachers that he helped his friend in colouring. That made the kid and teacher happy and great. Tell your kid about it and appreciate them from your end. This makes them understand that they have done something good and got praised for it.

Similarly, make your kids notice how they felt about their friend sharing his snacks with him. This makes them feel gratitude for their friend who made him feel the joy of crunchies along with him. With this, your kid can cultivate the emotion of Gratitude which is the highest asset.

It is a good idea to make kids find something good in others and say the same to them. Teaching good manners is not only about being good or respecting others but also showing gratitude or apologizing if anyone got hurt for them or pleading with someone politely for things they need.
